What is your eating personality type?

Each of us has a primary ”eating personality type,” and whether we realize it or not, it can be one of the biggest obstacles we face. If you’re not quite sure what an “eating personality” is, I’ll give you a summary of the definitions as described in chapter 9 of my book – Weight Loss Secrets of Superstars.

Personality Name: The Binger

This personality eats a lot and typically enjoys it. They have the tendency to get comfortable in front of the TV with a bag of chips, cookies or some other type of highly processed snack food. They’ll eat to pass the time; they’ll eat when their bored and they’ll usually eat if food is put in front of them – even if they’re not hungry.

Their biggest challenges: They are affected by external factors (click here for more details) and eating is part of their lifestyle.

Personality Name: The Sentiment

This personality is commonly known as the emotional eater because they eat according to how they feel. When they are happy and excited they eat to enhance their mood, and when they are down in the dumps, they reach for a bag of snacks because it’s the most convenient way to pick themselves up or get pleasure at the moment.

Their biggest challenges: They are affected by external factors (click here for more details) and they like an instant fix and / or immediate gratification.

Personality Name: The Survivor

This personality usually does one of two things: a) they routinely go on starvation diets in an attempt to lose weight or b) they are so busy that they forget to eat or skip meals and go without eating for long periods of time.

Their biggest challenge: they continue to gain weight in spite of eating so little because their body goes into “survival mode.”

Personality Name: The Olympic Athlete

This personality will usually go to great lengths to lose weight. They’ll perform insane amounts of exercise; they’ll significantly reduce their calories and they’ll even eliminate carbohydrates from their meals in an attempt to burn more fat. They are dedicated to their weight loss goals, and they are usually willing to make great sacrafices to achieve their desired results.

Their biggest challenge: they exercise too much and eat too little because they are in too big of a hurry to lose weight.

Personality Name: The Floater

This personality type likes the idea of losing weight, but doesn’t have a “real” reason to motivate them to get results. They read weight loss and dieting books, they try the diets they read about in the magazines, and they like to talk about losing weight.

Their biggest challenge: they don’t have a “real” reason to achieve results.

The importance of understanding these eating personalities is that it will enable you to more easily identify your reason(s) for being overweight. Once you understand why you are overweight, you can begin working towards finding the best solution to permanently eliminate excess body fat.

One thing to keep in mind that most of us are not just one personality type. We can have the tendencies of one, two, or we can even be a combination of all five. Having been a combination of all five myself at different times in my life, I’ve created this blog to address the needs, issues and challenges each eating personality faces.
